Robert Ivy And His Lifetime Achievement Award

Robert Ivy is the chief executive officer of the American Institute of Architects. On April 11th, 2018, he was given the Noel Polk Lifetime Achievement Award. The organization that gave him this honorary award was the Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters.

What makes this event extra special is the fact that this is the first time an architect has ever received the award. The Noel Polk Lifetime Achievement award goes to Mississippians who have significantly contributed to the arts. Artists and people who have donated to the arts fall under eligibility for this award. The Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters acknowledges various forms of art—both visual and performance.

Robert Ivy is a practicing architect, though he also works as a writer, commentator and author for the topic that he is an expert in—architecture.

Prior to becoming the Chief Executive Officer of the American Institute of Architects. He worked at McGraw Hill’s Architectural Record as Editor-in-chief. Architectural Record is a journal pertaining to the topic of architecture. Under his wing, Architectural Record won many awards. One of its many awards was the National Magazine Award for General Excellence. At some point, he launched a version of Architectural Record that was published in Mandarin, making the great journal accessible to people who are fluent in one of the world’s most widely spoken languages (other than English).

Enamored with architecture and history, Robert Ivy published a book about Fay Jones, titled Fay Jones: Architect. The Art Library Society of North America praised this work for its high caliber of scholarship and quality.

On June 2nd, the Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters gave the award to Ivy, as well as Andrew Carry Young—a stained glass designer. The Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters gives Lifetime Achievement Awards sometimes, though they annually give out awards for specific areas of the arts.

Initially, Robert Ivy attended Sewanee: The University of the South for a Bachelor’s degree in English. He attended Tulane University in the pursuit of his Master of Architecture degree. Before he embarked on his architecture career, he served in the U.S. Navy as an officer.
