Riot Games is headquartered in Santa Monica, California. They are the designers of the League of Legends game, which is played around the world. Riot Games is also owned by Tencent, which is a Chinese technical company. Tencent has not interfered much with Riot Games, but last year due to pressure by the Chinese government, Tencent requested that Riot Games develop some new software.
Tencent wanted Riot Games to develop software that tracked how long players accessed the game. In addition, they also wanted players of a certain age limited to two hours a day and limited from playing from 9 pm to 8 am. Players that violated these rules would be given detriments in the game, or banned from playing completely. Clearly, this is quite different than the way games are played in the United States. The Chinese government was concerned about children becoming game addicts to the exclusion of all else.
Riot Games complied with this request for its Chinese customers. As the game comes up on two hours, it tells certain customers they must log off to prevent game addiction. Other notices that appear between 9 pm and 8 am keep players of a certain age from using the game during these hours. Players who attempt to lie about their age are banned from playing the game.
Other game manufacturers that want to enter the large Chinese market are facing the same restrictions if they want to operate their games in China. Riot Games complied because they are Chinese owned and they have a large presence in the country. Some game manufacturers might be discouraged from entering this market in the future due to restrictions that might be imposed by the Chinese government. To know more about the company click here.
