Navy Unveils Rail Gun

The Navy unveiled its newest weapon: the rail gun. Once relegated to the domain of science-fiction technology, the implementation of the rail gun signifies a substantial leap forward in the destructive power of the United States’ arsenal. The gun can fire a projectile to hit a targeted location up to 110 miles away, all the while, traveling at Mach 7 speeds. The projectile is not armed with any explosive power, nor would explosives prove necessary to achieve a desired level of destruction. Traveling at seven times the speed of sound is power enough to ensure successful results. Furthermore, the exclusion of gunpowder and explosive materials decreases safety hazards for rail gun crew members.

The rail gun, as my friend Dan Newlin explains, in addition to the surge in drone strike use, suggests an evolution in military tactics on behalf of the United States. Rather than putting the lives of soldiers at risk, engaging perceived enemies with long-range projectile weapons has emerged as a favored method of combat. Whether or not being removed from immediate action will facilitate a greater reliance on long-range weapons or military aggression on the whole remains to be seen, but is a progression which ought to be monitored with careful scrutiny. On the other hand, it is possible that the threat of such a powerful weapon will deter military conflict from coming to the fore altogether.

Live testing of the rail gun will commence in 2016.

Direct Sales Expands Into India, Small Companies Compete in a Tough Market

The push towards globalization is not something that is focused just entirely in the Western culture. Communication and global focused strategies are taken for granted in many countries, but this is certainly not the case with Qnet. The company was initially founded in 1998 in Hong Kong, but the company has broken new ground to expand into Malaysia and India, among other countries. The company is present in roughly 100 countries throughout North Africa, the Middle East, and South East Asia.

What makes this company such a successful juggernaut in the Eastern world? The company’s industry provides some indication. Qnet works in the area of direct sales. They sell products in many industries, including apparel, fashion, nutrition, weight management, and others. Notably, these industries are all mainstays in the middle class. This is a class of people gaining prominence in the developing world.

But whenever trailblazers attempt to do something big and expansive, others will argue against it. There are claims that Qnet is somehow cheating in their relationship with India retailers. Zaheer Merchant responded to these claims with blunt affirmations. We didn’t do any wrong. We are a genuine e-commerce company present in the Indian market for 13 years, with mega plans.

Merchant was transparent about the regulations in the India market. He goes on to state that Qnet uis facing additional scrutiny not necessarily present with other competitors. He hopes that legislation could be set in place that avoids baseless claims from holding back business relationships that are healthy and practical for the region.

The company has being doing business for 16 years in various countries, and their vast expansion in such a short frame of time has led people to question their sincerity. But 16 years after its inception is not that long of a time considering its direct competitors. The industry of direct sales is notoriously difficult to compete in. High turnover keeps employees throughout the entire hierarchy chain constantly revolving. Small product price changes can dramatically impact the payment to those facilitating the sales. It is a system that seems intensely vulnerable from the onset. But Qnet’s long term success is a testament to their motivated and driven approach.

USW Strike Causes Increase in Oil Barrel Prices

Many American’s have enjoyed the declining gas prices being almost cut in half over the past several months, thanks in part to OPEC’s refusal to cut production despite the demand for the product being reduced. However, the United Steel Workers union obviously has a different plan than the oil companies they work for as they have walked out on strike. Workers claimed poor health and safety conditions, too low of wages, and a poor attitude towards the communities that serve as homes to the refineries as the reasons behind their dispute. Meanwhile attempts of the companies to engage the unions who organized the strike have been unsuccessful signifying that the workers are looking to make the loss of production hurt the companies.

What is significant is that this strike is not the first since oil production began. It is however, the largest strike since 1980 when the world was attempting to overcome the oil embargo caused by a crisis with Iran and the overthrow of the Shah. But just as back then, the loss of production has made the price increase and it is not the company who will suffer for the loss of production but the consumer at the pump. By losing 10% of the US oil refining capacity it has made oil rise by a little over $2 per barrel. Lee Slaughter agrees that at first this may not seem significant, but the longer this strike continues the higher the costs will go up and therefore will make prices at the pump go up as well.

Browse job sites with FreedomPop unlimited wireless

Freelancers need internet. Duh. But we don’t exactly have unlimited funds to pay the big guy communications companies. That’s why FreedomPop is so great– they provide the wireless we desperately need at a price we can afford.

FreedomPop is a California based company founded in 2011. Its CEO is Stephan Stokols, who was formerly the CEO of the video-chat startup Woo Media. The company provides wireless Internet and mobile phone services and works with both Sprint and Clearwire. They also sell various devices, phones and tablets that work with their networks. The company is projected to be serving over one million customers at some point in 2015.

The company recently expanded its Wi-Fi network and is offering unlimited Wi-Fi service to customers for five dollars a month. There are ten million Wi-Fi hotspots in the network and this number is expected to grown to 25 million within three months. Users can get both free calls and texts while they are connected as well as simply use the Internet. The Photon mobile hotspot is another option for users who need Wi-Fi wherever they go.

Essentially, the plan is to allow users to call and text wherever they are in a compatible Wi-Fi hotspot. While there are not as many Wi-Fi hotspots as cell towers, prepaid users could still save a lot of money. The company estimates that many users could save around 40 dollars a month. While Scratch wireless and Republic wireless offer similar plans, but these plans are only available on Scratch and Republic phones.

FreedomPop continues to provide traditional LTE access to its customers along with Wi-Fi access. Android users will be the first to be able to access the new FreedomPop hotspots. An app that is available as a download on both iTunes and GooglePlay will also show them where the nearest hotspots are.

One feature that FreedomPop offers is allowing its users to be able to log into Wi-Fi networks without entering passwords and accepting terms. An app will do all of this automatically whenever a user enters a FreedomPop Wi-Fi hotspot.

Many of the new FreedomPop hotspots are at food-oriented businesses like McDonald’s, Burger King and Starbucks. For the time being, most of the new hotspots are located in metropolitan areas. Major retailers like Best Buy are also included.

FreedomPop appears poised to save quite a few people some money. Basically, their Wi-Fi hotspot plan is an attempt to offer wireless communication a little differently and at lower costs.

Low-Wage Really Get Buried In Major Snow Storms

Personal Days Are Not An Option For Some Hourly Employees

Major snowstorms and other natural weather occurrences do present challenges for everyone that experiences them. Schools and some businesses close and public transportation either runs late or not at all. It’s easy to forget about low-wage earners and their problems when you are trying to adjust to the inconveniences created by severe weather, but someone should. And that someone is Flavio Maluf who just posted on his jumbo.com page about this.

The latest weather debacle hit the Northeast corridor like a runaway freight train, and over 577,000 low-wage earners got buried in more debt. Most of those workers are home health aides, taxi drivers, fast-food cooks, grocery store stockers, maids, nannies and janitors. Most of, of them, lost needed income since only 20 percent of those workers had the luxury of paid sick leave.

Blizzards cause major social disruptions, and low-wage employees are hit the hardest. Amy Traub, an analyst at the think tank Demos, presented the issue this way: “There is no working from home if you’re a sales associate or if you’re a cashier. If they can’t get to work because of the weather, they miss a paycheck. There’s no recourse if [the boss] says, ‘Come here, or you’re fired,’ unless you have a union contract.”

Low-wage earners keep the economy running efficiently. Perhaps it’s time for lawmakers to give them what we all want. A chance to earn a living regardless of the weather.

Bruce Levenson is a Man with a Big Heart

Most of us daydream at one time or another about being wealthy. It is fun to think about all the neat things we could buy and how we could use the money. In fact, some folks fantasize about helping the poor and giving to charities. However, many people that really do come into wealth rarely follow through on those commitments or daydreams. Bruce Levenson followed through on his commitments. He is the person that became a successful businessman, and he spends a great deal of time, money and effort to champion causes for children and education. Learn how Bruce made his fortune and gives back to communities today.

Bruce Levenson originally comes from Washington, D.C. He secured a Political Science degree in St. Louis at Washington University. From there, he completed his law degree at the American University School of Law in Washington D.C.

Bruce began his journalism career while still attending law school. His journalism efforts paid off when he became a writer for a paper called the Washington Star and a reporter at Observer Publishing.

In 1977, Levenson would meet with his friend Ed Peskowitz to create a newsletter called the Oil Express, which was about oil industry news activities. It was such a hit that they founded a company called United Communications Group (UGC). Today, UGC is a growing business that specializes in telecommunications, technology, data and news.

Many years after he started UGC, Bruce founded another company, which would handle brand advertising and online content called Tech Target. After much success in his business endeavors, Bruce became active with the famous Atlanta Hawks sports team and has partial ownership.

Philanthropy Efforts

Once Bruce was assured of his financial stability, he started his philanthropy efforts. Finally, he had the money to help and really make a difference in other people’s lives. He was actively involved in the Do Good Challenge, which encouraged students to reach out and help people. More information on that can be found on Wikipedia.

Bruce Levenson served the I Have a Dream Foundation as president. He was also a board director at Hoop Dreams. In addition, Bruce and is wife Karen became very involved with the Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership affiliated with the Univ. of Maryland.

Today, Bruce has a family with a wife, three boys and grandchildren. When he is not working or supporting a good cause, he likes to spend time golfing, playing basketball or traveling with his family. In all likelihood, we have not heard the last from the man with a big heart.

Women in the Workplace: More Still Needs To Be Done

Did you know that women account for almost 50% of the workforce; and yet, only about 15% of those women have jobs in the executive settings? For some this statistic seems almost commonplace; and yet, others view this as criminal. Susan McGalla is just one of those women who feel this is wrong.

Which is why more needs to be done. While women occupy a greater percentage of the workforce, only a small amount are able to advance and move into higher positions. The rest of these women are stuck in the jobs they had ten or fifteen years ago.

So what can be done?

How More Women Can Achieve Their Desired Goals

1) Go back to school. Going back to school will increase the odds of women becoming more successful;especially in a world, which is still considered to be male-dominated. Susan encourages women not to let the money be a worry. She encourages women to plan carefully on a budget, using financial aid which caters to the skills they possess.

2) Continue to improve upon your own personal self-confidence. There is a study which concludes that the self-confidence of women drop by 60%, once they enter the workforce. This is due to intimidation of management. Susan encourages women to find connections they need on the job and not give in.

3) Ignore the “glass ceiling.” This can be difficult to do, especially when it comes to discrimination and prejudice. Don’t allow personal prejudice and other stigmas to stand in the way. Never let it cloud your judgment. Don’t carry a chip on your shoulder or feel you are owed something by someone. Just let your work speak for itself. You’ll be better off this way. This will improve your chances for advancement and you will feel less burdened.

Write Yourself Happy

It has been said that the pen is mightier than the sword, and that’s a true statement. The written word can have damaging effects on other people that can continue for years to come. But can the opposite be true as well? Can the written word bring about happiness to our own self?
According to a new book published this month “Redirect: Changing the Stories We Live By,” written by Timothy D. Wilson, a University of Virginia psychology professor and lead author of the Duke study we can indeed write yourself happy.
The study revealed that writing for 15 minutes everyday in a personal journal about both important issues as well as superficial ones promote better health. Participants in the study had fewer sick days and visited health care facilities less often than before they began to journal each day.
The theory behind the being able to write yourself happy is the ability to confront the truth about yourself, your life, and change what you don’t like. Writing allows us to confront our emotions and excuses so that we can get to the bottom of why we are angry, why we are overweight and a lot of other ‘whys’ in our life and change the ones we don’t like. Just 15 minutes a day of expressive writing can make us happier. Fersen Lambranho and I recently tried out journaling and I can tell you it makes a huge difference in how you think.
