Helane Morrison is a woman with a great sense of justice and fair play. She spent 11 years with the Securities and Exchange Commission making sure businesses follow government regulations and consumers are treated fairly. She began her career with the SEC in 1996 when she was hired to run the SEC’s San Francisco district office’s regional enforcement activities. Her work was so impressive she was promoted to district administrator in 1999. Her task was to oversee the examination and enforcement programs that were under the San Francisco office’s jurisdiction.
Her promotion to regional director greatly enlarged the area under her purview. It included Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Northern California, Northern Nevada and Oregon. While with the SEC Helane Morrison earned the reputation as someone that goes after businesses that broke the law regardless of how large and powerful they were. During her 11 years with the SEC she brought a number of high-profile cases against major companies including NextCard and McKesson HBOC. Morrison also initiated cases alleging insider trading by a number of investment brokers and advisors. She also investigated many companies for defrauding senior citizens.
Helane Morrison was uniquely qualified for her role with the SEC. Prior to being hired there she had spent 10 years as a practicing attorney with the California law firm Howard, Rice, Nemerovski, Canady, Falk & Rabkin. While there she had defended corporate clients in cases brought by the SEC. Morrison had also spent two years as a law clerk for Supreme Court Justice Harry Blackmun and Appeals Court Judge Richard A. Posner after earning her Juris Doctor from the University of California, Berkley. While in law school she had been the California Law Review’s editor-in-chief.
After leaving the SEC Morrison was hired as Hall Capital Partners LLC‘s chief compliance officer and general counsel. Her work at the private investment company was so well received Morrison was promoted to the company’s managing director and was made a member of their executive committee. People that know Helane Morrison is not surprised by her success. She has a history of superior achievement ever since she left Brooklyn headed for Northwestern University to study Journalism.
