For many years, Chris Burch has made significant contribution in finance and fashion. In 2012, the veteran entrepreneur, who is known for his retailing brands C. Wonder and Tory Burch, acquired a beach hostel on the Indonesian Island of Sumba. Alongside hotelier James BcBride, Chris transformed the facility into a five-star resort, which they launched in 2015 as Nihiwatu. In 2016, Travel + Leisure voted Nihiwatu as the best hotel in the planet. Speaking to Business Jet Traveler, Burch said that Nihiwatu’s success exceeded his expectations. He pointed out that he bought the Island for his children as a treasure to be preserved and benefit the community.
The facility has 27 private villas, including Chris’ private home that has four additional villas. Each villa features a private plunge pool that offers a fascinating view of the Indian Ocean. The facility also has a large indoor-outdoor entertaining area, two tree houses each with a bedroom, bathroom and a balcony and one with a living room, and a beach spa. To enhance the design of the facility, Chris has adopted traditional Sumbanese décor, which includes antiques, Ikat prints and local wood. Customers enjoy yoga sessions, surfing at the beach, horseback riding and field excursions in the nearby waterfall. Prices for one-bedroom villa start from $750 per night during the low season.
