The Gunzburg factory processes meat products that are supplied to McDonalds restaurants across the globe. OSI Group is the sole owner of this factory, and it was set up to supply food products to McDonald’s mainly. A brief visit to the factory was made to see how the hamburgers are made from scratch. Before entering the facility, everyone is supposed to have on protective wear to ensure the food remains uncontaminated. The same also applies to the employers on site. Everyone wears hair nets, boots and overall to ensure the factory is clean at all times. The hygiene levels maintained at the OSI Group factory are extremely high to ensure no meat contamination. First, all staff members are supposed to be physically healthy before working at the factory.
If any employee has a cold or flu, they are asked to go home until they are well again. Second, the factory is disinfected every single day to ensure the meat stays 100% clean at all times. The meat processing begins by sorting out the meat to check for any bones. All bones are removed before the meat is ground. The meat is first packed in crates before being taken to the meat grinder. All the crates are of the same size and contain the same amount of meat. A huge machine is used to grind the meat into small fine pieces. Once the meat is now minced, another machine is used to make the meat into hamburgers. The machine ensures that the hamburgers are of the same size and thickness.
The McDonalds factory also has a laboratory on its perimeters that is used t test the hamburgers before they are packed and ready to go. The lab tests the hamburgers to make sure the fat content is right and the meat is safe for consumption. Taking the hamburgers for testing ensures that all the meat that is consumed is safe. The hamburgers are then packed and ready for transport once the fat content is found to be right.
